Shelomo Asher served on the Israeli Supreme Court from 1977-1980. Asher was born in 1910 in Przemysl, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and he immigrated to Israel in 1933. With the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the Jewish Brigade in the British Army and served there until the war ended in 1945. In January 1971 he was appointed to head a committee to review the tax system in Israel. During his tenure, he headed the Asher Committee - a Public Committee on the conflict of interest of ministers and deputy ministers. This committee set principles for the protection of integrity and the prohibition of receiving benefits that are still in place today. He passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.
