Ben-Porat, Miriam

Miriam Ben-Porat was born in Russia in 1918, and she emigrated to Israel in 1936. Ben-Porat  finished law school in 1945 and was appointed as a judge in the District Court of Jerusalem in 1958, eventually becoming that court’s president in 1975. While serving as a judge, she also served as an associate professor at Hebrew University. In 1977 she was the first woman given a permanent seat as a justice on the Israeli Supreme Court. She served as Vice President of the Court from 1983 until her retirement in 1988. From 1988-98, she served as State Comptroller. In 1991, she was awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement. She died on July 26th, 2012.
