Englard, Izhak
Izhak Englard was born in 1933 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and grew up in Switzerland. Englard received a religious education in Yeshivat Etz Haim in Switzerland and, upon immigrating to Israel in 1951, continued his studies at Yeshivat Kfar Haroeh. In 1952 Englard commenced his studies in the law faculty at the Hebrew University, completing his degree summa cum laude in 1956. In 1957 he received a PhD in law from the University of Paris. Englard joined the law faculty at the Hebrew University in 1958 and served as a professor of law there until 1997. Among Englard’s areas of expertise are tort law, comparative law, and jurisprudence. Between 1971-1974, Englard served as head of the center for research of Jewish Law at the Hebrew University. In 1997 Englard received the Israel Prize for law. He was appointed that year as a justice in the Israeli Supreme Court, a position which he held until his retirement in 2003. Englard has served as visiting professor and lecturer at many universities, including Yale Law School, USC Law School, University of Rome, University of Zurich, University of Pennsylvania Law School, and Columbia Law School.
