Kahan, Yitzhak
Yitzhak Kahan was born in Brody, Galicia, in 1913. Kahan studied law, economics, and management in the University of Lviv. In 1935 Kahan immigrated to Israel and settled in Haifa. In 1950 Kahan was appointed as a judge in a Magistrate’s Court in Haifa, and in 1953 he was appointed to the district court. In 1970 Kahan was appointed as a Supreme Court justice, and in 1982 he was appointed president. In the same year, Kahan was chosen to head Tthe Commission of Inquiry into the Events at the Refugee Camps in Beirut’ (Sabra and Shatila), which came to be known as the Kahan Commission. Kahan retired in 1983 and passed away in 1985 at the age of 71.
