Witkon, Alfred

Alfred Witkon was born in Berlin in 1910. He studied at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn, and Freiberg, the last of which granted him a JD. In 1935 Witkon immigrated to Israel, where he worked as a private lawyer. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Witkon was appointed president of the District Court of Jerusalem. In 1951 he was temporarily appointed Supreme Court Justice, and in 1954 his appointment became permanent. Witkon served as a lecturer for tax law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and his book on tax law is considered in Israel a basic text book on that topic. Witkon retired in 1980 and died in 1984.
