Tal, Tzevi Eliyahu

Born in 1927 in Poland as Tzevi Teitelbaum, Tal immigrated to Israel in 1935. Between 1948-1949 Tal served in the IDF, and in 1949 he enrolled in the Law Faculty at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, graduating in 1953. Between 1954-1978 Tal practiced law in Jerusalem, following which he was appointed to the Jerusalem District Court. In 1994 he was appointed to the Supreme Court and remained in that position until his retirement in 1997. In 1999 Tal was appointed to head the Tal Committee, commissioned to examine the legal arrangement which allows yeshiva students to delay their army service. Following the committee’s suggestion, the Knesset enacted a law which came to be known as the Tal Law.
